Eve picGenesis 1:26, Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…

To think we are created in His image and His likeness is a stunning thought. That God would even dream and then commit Himself to create a vessel that would represent His likeness. A vessel that would ultimately be prepared to shadow His image and bring forth a human sketch of Himself.

Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God and the Son of Man made this astounding announcement;

“I have come that they may have life…” John 10:10

Yet, we watch as He is nailed to a cross. We watch a brutal death take place.

 Life …

The disciples must have been more than astonished at the crucifixion and death of their beloved Friend. They must have stumbled away from the foot of the Cross in disillusionment…

Didn’t He tell us and everyone else, that He came so we might have life” ?” Didn’t He tell us to abide in Him”? “Didn’t He say He would never leave us or forsake us”?…

Life…

Don’t we ask ourselves today, “What is the meaning of life”?

As I searched this word out, I found it holds more than a definition of heart beating and lungs breathing.  More than just your present state of existence. It holds something dear; it holds our very souls…Life is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as something essential to the existence of something else. It is defined as the source of vigor and a period of flourishing.

But what did Jesus mean by life?

We hold to the promise of health, substantial wealth, and happiness. It is the western church dream…

But, what did Jesus mean by life? He said things like, “men will hate you because of me”, and “take up your cross and follow me”…I’m not sure I see the western church dream in those red-letter words.

I began to study the Greek and Hebrew definitions of this word, life, and I found forty-four expressions that relate to “life”… A mosaic of sorts…

It is amazing how so many branches can come from One Root…

In studying these expressions, what did I find? I found the life and heart of Jesus. I found His steps and character.  I discovered the truth of Genesis 1:26.

Yes, within the branches of “life”, I uncovered a beautifully defined mosaic of the Messiah embedded within the Root.

The mosaic of Life begins with a road trodden. A road travelled to a destination. And it is a road that if travelled well, will lead to the destination of eternal life.

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus and His ministry. He raised up a highway for others…

Situated along this road are emotions. One which gives essence to “longing”.  It is literally defined as appetite, but also gives a reference to sustenance. It also gives us an allusion to “running…

Jesus said we should not mourn while the Bridegroom is here, but when He is gone…He also said He is the Bread of Life, that His Word satisfies. And Paul tells us our road trodden is a race to be run.

Although Jesus was fully God, He was also fully Man. He has times of being flooded with emotions. He turns the tables over in the Temple for it was being defiled by buying and selling…He could be compassionate and bring healing to the lame, and sick; even when fatigue may have taken over His body.

He survived the wilderness and temptation by the Word. It became His sustenance in the desert.

Jesus knew what it meant to be hungry. Yet, he chose to take that hunger and place it in the hands of His Father, for He knew who held the Bread. He knew who held the heart of Man, and who knew how to join the both together.

For Jesus, it was joined on a Cross.

Jesus had an appetite for God and to do His will. That is why He came.

And so, He surrendered to death, death on a Cross that our hunger might be filled as well.

The word Life also brings forth the Hebraic expressions, “to be whole” and “properly united”.  Just another benefit of the Cross. Another piece to the Mosaic of Life…

The word Life means to repair and restore. Many times we have a false picture of Jesus and God. This picture is one of rules and regulations…Jesus came to remove that stone and open a tomb that has long since been shut…

Life…

The term life holds many more Hebraic pictures; A nomad’s tent, the leader of a flock, or a guardsman. It is a rod or a staff; even a walking stick.

Yet there are two final definitions of Life…

“Spendo”- it is a Greek term and it presents the definition, are you ready…?

“To devote one’s blood to”  As a sacrifice ready to be offered…

“Anastasis”….

A resurrection from death”…

Jesus came that we may have life and we see fully He is the true meaning of Life!

So, as we travel our roads and run our race, as we hunger for more, may our vessels be broken and then prepared so we may be His shadow and bring glory to Him that has conquered death…
